The US one is branded US-Canada with the lens serial number on it. To answer your question, the only way to tell grey market from US is the warranty card. I am just pointing out that there is no hard and fast rule with this. With my 24-70L however, I had to pay for that repair. I simply applied online for the repairs needed, and was covered in 2 different situations. In neither case, either, did I have to provide the receipt, even though in one case, I had it just in case. So in two different situations, I have had gear covered that I was not the original owner. That situation has happened to me, and in the situation you called out, I did actually have the seller send the receipt in with the gear I bought. If the gear hasn't been out for a year, it is automatically covered without the original receipt.
I'm guessing you either got lucky or were posing as the original owner if you had a secondhand receipt.

I am just a little particular about buying USA only Canon gear. If not, there are plenty of good repair shops that should.
Once out of warranty they might fix anything that is a “real” canon product. I thought there were stories of Canon refusing to fix grey market items even outside of warranty? If you need an out of warranty repair, you can get if fixed at any Canon service center in the USA so long as you're willing to pay. If it's a used lens it doesn't matter if you bought in the USA, Japan or elsewhere since warranties are not transferable. There is anEurooe site that will verify Europe products but can not find anywhere to check to see if it is a USA Lens. I have the serial number and all the other codes. I know the only real difference is the warranty and where to get it fixed.
